This savory sweet chocolate bread is a wonderful snack or breakfast treat!

  • Yields: 16 servings
Add to favorites:

¾ cup warm water

2 tsp active dry yeast

6 Tbl sugar (or 5 Tbl for an even more savory loaf)

1 egg

¼ cup olive oil

3 cups white flour (or 2 cups white flour and 1 cup white whole wheat flour)

4 Tbl dutch cocoa powder

2-3 Tbl mini chocolate chips (or just 1 Tbl for an even more savory loaf)

~ 1 egg beaten with 1 Tbl water for egg wash - don't add this to your bread!)

1Combine warm water, yeast, and 1 Tbl sugar into a large bowl, and allow to rest for 10 mintes so the yeast will bubble.

2Meanwhile, combine the rest of the sugar, flour, and cocoa powder in a medium bowl.

3After the yeast mixtures is bubbly, add egg and oil and stir gently.

4Add flour mixture and mix well.

5Then add the mini chocolate chips and knead by hand or with a stand mixer for a couple of minutes.

6Allow the dough to rise in a warm place for 1 hour.

7Punch down and form dough into whatever shape you so desire, and place it on a parchment lined baking sheet. Let rest for additional half hour.

8Heat your oven to 350 during the last few minutes of the rising, and brush the egg wash onto your bread before putting it in the oven.

9Bake for 28-30 minutes or until internal temperature reaches 175-180 degrees.

10Serve warm with milk!

11Once cooled, store it in a ziplock bag or cover with plastic wrap.
