Harissa Paste

Harissa paste is a spicy condiment that originates from North Africa and adds heat and flavor to many dishes. It's made from a mix of hot chilis, garlic, spices and olive oil blended into a thick, spreadable paste. Common peppers include piri piri, serrano and cayenne. Harissa can range from mild to fiery hot depending on the peppers used. It has a bright red color and a piquant, smoky flavor. Harissa paste is commonly used in stews, couscous, sandwiches, dips and marinades. It's excellent with lamb, chicken, fish and vegetables. Harissa pairs well with cumin, coriander and mint. Use it to add big, bold flavor and a kick of heat. Start with a small amount and adjust spice levels to taste.
