Orris Root Powder

Orris root powder is a flour-like, off-white powder ground from the dried roots of certain iris flowering plants. Although orris root powder has a flowery, woodsy aroma, its flavor is bitter. In cooking, it's primarily used for its pleasant fragrance, but it also has uses as a thickener or clarifying agent. In addition, orris root powder has some traditional uses in herbal medicine, though evidence of effectiveness is lacking. Light and powdery in texture with a delicate violet scent, orris root powder is a natural way to add its characteristic floral essence to some foods and beverages.
